How Kiwi

This week we were trying to summarise the main idea of a topic. First we have to read the story. Then give the definations for each word that we dont know and look them up on maori dictionary. Next we have read the story again and give information of who, what, when, how, where. After that we did a 25 word sentence using only information from who, what, where, how, when and from the definations to summerise the text.
Summarising the Main Idea
Good readers notice keywords.  Here are some clues to help you find keywords:
  • Key words are often repeated in the title and the text
  • A key word helps you to remember an important idea

Beginning
Middle
End
Long, long ago, the skies were filled with birds flying above the forests.
The gods called the birds and told them that the trees were dying. They asked the birds, one by one, to come and live on the forest floor and save the trees, but all of them except Kiwi said no.
Kiwi came to live on the damp, dark forest floor. He ate the insects and saved the trees

Read the text and record key words/phrases that answer these questions:

What?
Kiwi had to go to the dark black forest because they needed to hunt insects and save the trees.
Where?
In the forest.
When?
Long long ago in Aotearoa.
Who?
The kiwi and some other birds.
Why?
The other birds said “No thanks!” except kiwi.
How?
The kiwi had to risk his wings to save the forest.
Now using the words you wrote down summarise the text in 25 words or less.

Long long ago in Aotearoa, kiwi with rainbow wings had to go to the black dark forest because they needed to save trees and hunt insects.
